  • This book offers a compilation of essays regarding the military history of Rhode Island. Although small in size, Rhode Island history is big in significance. Since the American Revolution, and especially in the Civil War, Rhode Islanders have long contributed to the nation’s defense. These essays, each different in its scope, provide an overview into the Rhode Island military experience and a better understanding of the rich military heritage of the smallest state.Rhode Island’s motto is Hope, originally styled as “In Te Domine Speramus,” meaning “Our Hope is in Thee, Lord.” Rhode Islanders have long used the anchor as a symbol of Hope, while wearing badges and buttons inscribed with the motto on their uniforms in times of conflict, or even now by the Rhode Island State Police and Rhode Island National Guard.Chapters include: “We landed beat them from fence to fence,” “Died in the Service of his Country,” “The muffled drum’s sad roll has beat,” Solving a Rhode Island Civil War mystery, “An Officer of Rare Judgement,” “Martyrs to the Cause of Liberty,” “I have not heard of him since,” In Search of Private Coman, Writing Rhode Island Civil War History, Ocean State Confederates, “They have just brought one more,” “Here we lost many good men,” “With regret I am called to inform you,” “Scarce a man but lost a friend or relative,” and Lines on the Death of Alfred S. Knight.

  • CASTAWAYS IN A SEA OF DANGER!Pauline, Otto, and Dominick were children cast into the wild South Sea's ocean. The brave Rigonda family of England, however, clung to life on their lifeboat despite the demise of the rest of the castaways, searching weakly for a sail in the distance. Instead, they found a dead ship, wrecked on a reef. And the reef, most fortunately, was by an island. They were castaways, little Robinson Crusoes on an exotic volcanic South Seas Island. But they were not long alone, for another ship in trouble reached the island, filled with odd men and trouble. However, such was Pauline's talent that she bonded them into a new government for the island. And Pauline became . . . The Island Queen. But then . . . the volcano blew up! From the pen of a Victorian adventure writer without peer, R.M. Ballantyne, comes a tale of lost children you will never forget.

  • With an Introduction by Alex Dolby. Translation by W.H.G. Kingston. Jules Verne (1828-1905) is internationally famous as the author of a distinctive series of adventure stories describing new travel technologies which opened up the world and provided means to escape from it. The collective enthusiasm of generations of readers of his extraordinary voyages was a key factor in the rise of modern science fiction. In The Mysterious Island a group of men escape imprisonment during the American Civil War by stealing a balloon. Blown across the world, they are air-wrecked on a remote desert island. In a manner reminiscent of Robinson Crusoe, the men apply their scientific knowledge and technical skill to exploit the islands bountiful resources, eventually constructing a sophisticated society in miniature. The book is also an intriguing mystery story, for the island has a secret.

  • Treasure Island is an adventure novel by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, narrating a tale of "buccaneers and buried gold". Traditionally considered a coming-of-age story, Treasure Island is a tale noted for its atmosphere, characters and action, and also as a wry commentary on the ambiguity of morality – as seen in Long John Silver – unusual for children's literature. It is one of the most frequently dramatized of all novels. The influence of Treasure Island on popular perceptions of pirates is enormous, including such elements as treasure maps marked with an "X", schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen bearing parrots on their shoulders.
