• Examination Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (Englisches Seminar), 65 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: "Since Canada's literary tradition is fairly new, it is only natural that there should exist a genuine concern for identity."1 Consequently, numerous works have addressed the question: What is Canadian about Canadian literature? A general answer is hard to find, among other reasons because the concept of Canadian identity as such is anything but trivial. The connections between national literature and national identity are generally acknowledged and have been thoroughly analysed. As Miriam Richter points out, [i]t is only very recently though, that the role of Canadian children's literature in the process of defining national identity has come to be examined. Therefore, publications dealing exclusively with this topic exist to a comparatively small extent as yet.2 Despite the ongoing public and scholarly discussion of Canadian identity, it is important to ask whether the question of national identity is still a meaningful one when globalisation is changing the world and rendering national borders increasingly permeable. Economic alliances such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which facilitates trade between Canada, The United States and Mexico, could work towards a relaxation not only of legal but also of cultural borders. Ther...

  • Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Mannheim (Lehrstuhl für Anglistische Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft), language: English, abstract: Travel writing helps travel writers to redefine their identity and to revise their concept of home as well as to determine its relative position in the world when using it as a frame of reference. In "Wanderlust: A Love Affaire with Five Continents", Elisabeth Eaves, both author and protagonist, renegotiates these two concepts - home and identity - in her inner journey of self-exploration. Making use of a qualitative and explorative approach, this paper investigates the question of how the search for identity and belonging is fashioned in the book. First, the theoretical part of the paper relates the concepts of home and identity to infer how home can function as a source of identity. These theoretical frameworks are then applied in the subsequent section to assess the manner and success of Elisabeth's strategies of identity construction providing an answer to the question whether her mobile lifestyle as a modern nomad leads to homelessness and lack of identity. Finally, the analysis section breaks down the narrative techniques Elisabeth uses to secure her public identity as travel writer and relates them to the construction of her personal identity.

  • When one spoke about 'the racial question' in pre-apartheid South Africa, one was not referring to conflicts between blacks and whites, but to frictions between the two white groups, namely the Afrikaners and the English-speaking. This book endeavors to explore how the Boer and the British dealt with their cultural differences and how this was reflected in their identity constructions, to examine how each group carved out their ambiguous identity(ies) as 'white Africans' at the beginning of the twentieth century and to evaluate how they balanced the ambivalence in their European-African heritage and commitments. By examining the portrayal of white identity in the writing of pre-apartheid South African authors, more specifically in the writings of William Charles Scully, Francis Carey Slater, Louis Leipoldt, Pauline Smith, Sarah Gertrude Millin, Roy Campbell, Laurens van der Post and Alan Paton, the goal of this book is to bring to light this negotiation and development of white identity as well as to reveal and analyze the identity constructions of Afrikaners and Anglo South Africans in pre-apartheid English literature.

Teaches at York University. Former school principal and school superintendent. Nominated for the York Presidents Teaching Award 2010 , abstract: Many have argued that there is no such thing as a Canadian culture or identity. This article explores the history of how schools in the past have shaped a national identity and how cultures transmit their vaules and traditions to their young. This article argues that there are twelve commonplaces about Canada that all Canadians, regardless of where they live or how long they have lived here can identify with. The schools across the country have an obligation to debate, argue and explore these twelve commonplaces thereby promoting a shared Canadian culture that is fluid, flexible and evolving. It argues that these twelve are not fixed in stone but are just a starting point for "keeping the conversation going". It promotes a revisioning of our culture throiugh a myulticulturalism prism.

  • Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (Institut für Anglistik/Amerikanistik), 64 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Canada has always been associated with its landscape, with a vast and inviolatenature, including prairies, forests with innumerable lakes, idyllic mountain rangesand the Arctic barrens in the far north. With an area of almost 10 million squarekilometers, Canada is the second largest country in the world, but with only 31million people living there and a population density of 3,2 inhabitants per squarekilometer, it is also the less populated.1The theme of nature and wilderness has also been reflected throughout Canadianliterary tradition. As Canadian author Aritha van Herk notes, "[t]he impact oflandscape on artist and artist on landscape is unavoidable" (1992, 139). Adopting thenorthern concepts of early explorers and settlers, most literature about the Canadianwilderness has been written by male authors. For a long time, the Canadian Northserved as background for historical romances and adventure stories. The response tothe landscape was often very negative, the wilderness was described as being hostileand dangerous. Parallel to that image, the landscape was portrayed in female terms,as being innocent, inviolate and beautiful - the Canadian North appeared as a femmefatale. Especially in its beginnings, Canadian literature was strongly ...

For this purpose, the research Question has been formulated as follows: How has a sense of European identity been affected by the European sovereign debt crisis? The notion of a European identity which lies at the heart of this study is everything but new to the policy makers in Brussels, to social theorists and to political scientists from around the globe. As elusive as the concept of a European identity might first appear, the sheer amount of academic publications, research projects, think tanks and media coverage that have contemplated the notion of European identity, indicate its fundamental importance to the future of the European project and its institutions. Given the fundamentally altered circumstances, which Europe has been facing since the onset of the European debt crisis in late 2009, it becomes necessary to reassess the contemporary state of an evolving sense of European identity. As large parts of the Academic community and various EU lead polls have suggested, the interplay between national and supra-national "imagined communities" and the E...

Introduction: The Impact of the English Colonial Language Policy on the Postcolonial IdentityMy paper aims at exploring the effects of English colonial language policy on the postcolonial identity and their representations in postcolonial literature. Before applying to the main works, on which I will focus, The Enigma of Arrival and Small Island, I would like briefly to introduce the reader to the objectives of English colonial language policy. English colonial language education not only responds to the demands of access to European knowledge, but also it is a way of effective governance over the colonized people. Under the mask of the moral imperial duty to enlighten uncultivated subjects, the established discourses of Anglicism and Orientalism aim at fashioning the tastes, opinions and morals of the natives after the British imperial style, making them deny their origins in an attempt to become more English than the Englishmen. The process of reshaping the colonials' identity is said to be for the sake of their own good, being in need to be cured of their ignorance. The indigenous cultures and languages are regarded as unable either to contain or to convey any sort of valuable information, because of being primitive and rude as the n...

Using Ilaje people of Ondo State as a case, this paper, through qualitative methods of study, examines the factors of history, elite politics, and the state in identity formulation and the effects which the construction of the "other" among a supposed homogeneous group has on the existing forms of social relationship. It is established from the study that though the advantage of the oil producing community identity is utilized to attain political and economic height, the identity remains subordinate to a much larger and inclusive Ilaje identity. Generally, this paper is a reflection on how identity is manipulated even in the local context to suit competition for resources. It discusses the cultural creation of space and its hegemonization in quest of making exclusive and optimum advantage of resource in the space. The paper concludes that even when the spatial differentiation is yet to generate any remarkable conflict, the feelings of "oneness" appears to have been sufficiently weakened.

  • Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Film Science, grade: none, , course: Film Studies, language: English, abstract: In spite of the diversity of Christopher Nolan's body of work, the director's experience of time, memory and identity has perhaps remained an integral part of his filmmaking. From Following (Christopher Nolan, 1998) to The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan, 2008) his films are debatably rooted in a cinematic experiment to interrogate the construction of time and the malleable nature of memory and identity. It is this examination of time and identity that unites the wide range of Nolan's work. Indeed, in many respects Nolan has arguably sought to develop a filmic language that concretely resembles the abstract structures of memory function and systems of identity. With this in mind, this thesis examines the representations of time, memory and identity in Nolan's films in order to attain an understanding of identity in contemporary cinema and thought. The paper will consider the reflexive strategies and implications behind Nolan's obsession with identity, not only in terms of his body of work but more importantly, in terms of what it can reveal about cinema's own relationship to issues of identity. More specifically, I contend that the insights of scientific, psychological and sociological literature on identity and memory as well as those of contemporary filmmaking are engaged in communicating the complex relationships amongs...

Drawing on the influential role of cinema in politics on the Indian subcontinent, and the perceived shared identity of the Tamil communities in Sri Lanka and India, the book researches the film in relation to the conflict. It discusses the differences in conception of the Indian Tamil identity and the Sri Lankan Tamil identity (in the film), and argues that the Indian Tamil is represented as politically and culturally superior and more empowered than the Sri Lankan Tamil. Using existing literature on identity formation and the socio-cultural history of Tamil identities of Sri Lanka and India as a reference point, the representation of the two Tamil identities in the film are analysed.

  • The nature of human reason is one of the thorniest of mysteries in philosophy. The reason appears in many specific forms within general areas such as cognition, thinking, experiencing beauty, and moral judgment. These forms are “perfectly” known in philosophy, yet an unknown pattern has been noticed which shows us that they are all a variation of the same theme: truth is an identity relation between the “thought” and “reality”; justice is an identity relation between the given and the deserved; beauty is an identity relation as rhyme is an identity relation between the final sounds of words; rhythm is an identity relation between time intervals; symmetry is an identity relation between two halves; proportion is an identity relation between two ratios; anaphora is an identity relation between the initial words. Particular things are identities in themselves and universals are identities between particulars. One idea associates another idea identical to it; an analogy is an identity between relations; induction is an identification between the known and unknown instances; and all the logic rests on the law of identity. What is common for all of them is the nature of reason itself.

  • The book is a treatise on an individual's search for self identity and belonging through the two acclaimed novels of Anita Desai, 'Cry, the Peacock' and 'Fire on the Mountain'. Anita Desai is an Indo- German by descent and one of the renowned Indo- Anglican Novelists. Her writings depict the richness of English language matched with the sophistication of her mind. They are filled with imagery, feminine consciousness and awareness of human psyche. The present study deals with the identity crisis of two characters namely 'Nanda' in 'Fire on the Mountain' and 'Maya' in 'Cry, the Peacock'. The study explores the struggle of the two women for identity and sanity. It explores the concept of psychoanalysis through the character of Maya. Maya tries to recapture her illusory world, where she loses her identity and sense of belonging. Through the character of Nanda, Anita Desai projects that self-respect is a basic human need; sense of belonging will emerge in one's life when they confront their miseries and arise from the illusory world. In the two novels, Anita Desai describes the need and solution for self-identity.

While there has been a significant concentration of constructivism on the description and understanding of state identity, constructivist approaches still have not comprehensively answered all the controversial questions of structural theories. The aim of the book, thus, is to improve understanding of state subjectivity and identity by means of Bourdieusian sociological approach, which provides a basis to form a middle-way between the structuralist and constructivist perspectives on the issues of identity and state. I test the applicability of Bourdieusian terminology in the fields of economic and social capital. In order to illustrate the theoretical dabates of the research in a more comprehensive way, the chapters in this stage utilize distinctive methodological concepts of neoliberalism, democratisation and the developing state. Ultimately, the book determines how Bourdieusian structural constructivism improves the theory of international relations beyond the existing borders of constructivism.

Candomblé and the Creation of Afro-Brazilian Identity".Nago Grandma and White Papa is a signal work in Brazilian anthropology and African diaspora studies originally published in Brazil in 1988. This edition makes Beatriz Gois Dantas's historioethnographic study available to an English-speaking audience for the first time.Dantas compares the formation of Yoruba (Nago) religious traditions and ethnic identities in the Brazilian states of Sergipe and Bahia, revealing how they diverged from each other due to their different social and political contexts and needs. By tracking how markers of supposedly "pure" ethnic identity and religious practice differed radically from one place to another, Dantas shows the social construction of identity within a network of class-related demands and alliances. She demonstrates how the shape and meaning of "purity" have been affected by prolonged and complex social and cultural mixing, compromise, and struggle over time. Ethnic identity, as well as social identity in general, is formed in the crucible of political relations between social groups that purposefully mobilize and manipulate cultural markers to define their respective boundaries--a process, Dantas argues, that must be applied to understanding the experience of African-descended people in Brazil.

Some scholars approached the theme, focussing on a "common historical heritage", which points to a basis for a collective identity (Habermas 2001; Giesen 2003), others based their arguments on political and institutional similarities among European countries like human rights protection, democracy and rule of law (Risse 2001). In other cases, the studies on the topic focussed on the ambivalent employ of the term "identity", arguing its (ab)-use, above all in EU-Treaties, instead of more obviously expressions as "legitimacy" or "sovereignty" (Bruha/ Rau 2000).The aim of this paper is to examine the topic from two distinctive perspectives: a post-national and a postmodern. Many years ago Hungary was unknown to most Canadian people, yet as time passed, Hungarian incomers have made great progress in introducing their country and cultural identity, and achieved greater awareness of their existence among the locals. We can learn about what heritage the past generations of Hungarians have left behind in Canada and get to know more about the new generation. We can get an insight of many subtopics, including what great presence Hungary, this small country, has in Canada, what kind of communities and social activities they have, or how much of their language, tradition and cultural existence is recognized and passed on. This thesis also gives an idea how these topics could be introduced as an educational material.

It establishes the importance of governance and civic society participation in the use of heritage for contemporary purposes, and discusses the problematic of the institutional and policy framework in the creation of strategies coherent with the local culture. This research analyses the case study of the city of Valparaiso, a city facing a longterm economic decline that was declared World Heritage Site in 2003 as part of the strategies to revitalize the city and improve its economy. • Technologies enabling 'mitochondrial transplantation' have the potential to mitigate future suffering; to prevent the inheritance of mitochondrial diseases. When considering the use of germ-line modification of the type I will consider there are some who claim such modifications do not avoid the 'impersonal harm/benefits' arguments; that depending on the timing of our actions genetic modification may affect numerical-identity, or perhaps even personal-identity (narrative-identity). The aim of this book is to contextualise the process of mitochondria germ-line modification within a detailed examination of our identity. I consider the potential of affecting identity in the context of both naturally occurring reproductive events and in respect of known identity-affecting events, in order to make the claim that the types of affects to either numerical-identity or personal-identity, resulting from mitochondria germ-line modification, should not in any sense be considered morally problematic.

  • Many individuals with disabilities develop low self-esteem because they regularly encounter a culture that devalues their disabilities. In fact, many resent their disabilities, and reject the idea that their disability is an important part of their identity. In this book, Dr. Cort Schneider utilizes an autoethnographic method of inquiry in order to illustrate his own struggle with his identity as a person with a disability. This book explores his transformation from a person who rejected his disability to a person that now openly embraces it. Dr. Schneider also explores the complex nature of identity development as it relates to those who have disabilities. Chapter One introduces the topic of identity and disability. Chapter Two explains the concept of autoethnography. Chapter Three explains Dr. Schneider's struggle with identity. Chapter Four examines the contradictions that are often present in the process of identity development. Chapter Five explores the impact that relationships can have on one's identity. Chapter Six discusses the role that public discourse plays in issues of identity. Chapter Seven explores the implications of the research that is presented in this book.
